Optimizing the Location of I/O Stations on Aisles to Evaluate Facility Layouts
and BibTeX reference
Layout planning is an appropriate area in which to apply optimization models. A method is proposed here for evaluating general layouts (block layouts) when interdepartemental circulation is directed along the aisles. The object is to provide the facility planner with a method of judging the quality of the various facility layout alternatives, taking into account the location of the input/output stations on the aisle network and by using the actual distances traveled by the handling equipment in this network. The evaluation method is applicable in cases where it is possible to position the input/output location on the global performance of these general layouts can be evaluated. An optimization model for the problem of station location is proposed, along with a heuristic for large-scale problems.
