EUGENE: An optimization-based decision support system for long term integrated regional solid waste management planning

This paper describes a decision support system based on a sophisticated mixed integer linear programming model, EUGENE, developed to help the regional decision makers in the long-term planning of the solid waste management activities. The model circumvents most of the limitations of current and earlier integrated waste management models. The paper focuses on these particular capabilities. Results illustrating those capabilities are presented for a real-world application and some directions for future developments are also given.
