Bowen Yi is currently an Assistant Professor in electrical engineering at Polytechnique Montreal. He obtained his PhD degree in control engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China in 2019. From 2017 to 2019, he was a visiting student at Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes (LSS), CNSR-CentraleSupélec, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. He later completed postdoctoral positions at the Australian Centre for Robotics (ACFR) at The University of Sydney (2019-2022) and the Robotics Institute, the University of Technology Sydney (September 2022-2023), Sydney, NSW, Australia.
His research interests focus on both fundamental and applied aspects of nonlinear systems, including the algorithms for estimation, control, and learning, with a specific emphasis on robotics. The theoretical research has been successfully applied to address practical challenges in robotic systems, particularly in robotic state estimation on manifolds (e.g. image feature depth estimation, localization, and navigation) and soft robots (modelling and control). He also works on online estimation problems in power electrons, and one of his paper on the senseless control of motors has been awarded the prestigious 2019 CCTA Best Student Paper Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society.
