Séminaire en format hybride au GERAD local 4488 ou Zoom.

Hydrogen is emerging as a critical element in the global push toward deep decarbonization, underscoring its growing importance in the energy sector. This trend is further evidenced by the increasing number of countries adopting hydrogen strategies. To assess the decarbonization potential of a hydrogen economy, decision support models covering the economy, energy and environment (so-called E3 models) can be used. These models can follow either a macroeconomic approach to model the linkages between the economy and energy and the costs of changing these linkages, or a bottom-up approach, which follows a highly disaggregated approach to model energy production and consumption, considering numerous alternatives and their associated costs. This presentation will first rely on a bottom-up model, ETEM-YUL, to assess the hydrogen potential for the Greater Montreal region towards carbon neutrality. To gain a broader perspective, this presentation will also rely on AD-MERGE, a global integrated assessment model, to present results for Canada considering different greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. These results will be put into perspective with those reported in the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
